Project Title: Ed Emberley Thumbprints

Description:

• A donation of stamp pads prompted our Ed Emberley thumbprint pictures.  Students brainstormed about the importance of a thumbprint in the real world; Identification, crime tool, etc.  We first experimented with a variety of different fingerprints, arranging them randomly on our papers.  Thin black Sharpies were used to add fun details to make our prints come alive!

April 2017 - Romero Britto Clay Project

Project Title: Romero Britto Clay Project

Description:

• The work of Brazilian neo-pop artist, painter, serigrapher, and sculptor, Romero Britto (born October 6, 1963) was explored.  Bold black lines, bright colors and everyday images were typical of his work.  Students created a slab hot plate complete with their own design in the style of Britto.  Special attention was paid to clay construction and glazing technique.

March 2017 - Jasper Johns

4^th and 5^th Grade

Project Title: Jasper Johns

Description:

• Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930) is an American Neo Dadaist and pop artist who chose to paint familiar images; flags, maps, numbers, letters so people would notice them.  Many of his ideas came form images he recalled from elementary school.  To force viewers to look at numbers and letters a new way, he presents them as visual objects.  4th and 5th graders used stencils plus water soluble oil pastels to complete this piece.

February 2017 - Zentangles

4^th and 5^th Grade

Project Title: Zentangles

Description:

• Zentangles are unique artistic designs that incorporate repeating patterns resembling etchings. Traditional Zentangles only use black, grey and white.  We began with guideline strings which represent the "golden thread" connecting all events that run through life.  This process involves problem solving, manual dexterity, creativity and innovation while relaxing.

January 2017 - Art of Advertising

4^th and 5^th Grade

Project Title: Art of Advertising

Description:

• The focus of this lesson was to teach 4th and 5th grade students to be critical thinkers as consumers.  Each artist designed a kids' product with attention to their container's size and shape, type of lettering/font, taste/flavor, healthy ingredients, image or "hook", color, and catch phrase or jingle.  We first studied existing kids' drinks and determined important components of a product.  Each student was assigned an art director to help guide them through the thought process.

December 2016 - Castle and Sun (Paul Klee)

Project Title: Castle and Sun - Paul Klee

Castle and Sun (1928)

Description:

• Students were introduced to a brief biography based on the life and work of Swiss born artist Paul Klee (1879-1940).  They discovered that geometric shapes were used to construct Klee's picture titled Castle and Sun. Rhythm and movement were achieved by repeating colors throughout his artwork.   Colored pencils and geometric tracers were used to build and fill in each piece.  Notice how our white outlines make each color glow.
